WORKING OUT VS. TRAINING
Yes, there’s a difference.
By Coach Elise Perez
In daily conversation, we use “working out” and “training” interchangeably, but they are not actually the same.
Working out is going into the gym and doing essentially whatever you want. Every time you step in the gym, you’re doing something different. You're choosing whatever exercises you like and often, whichever exercises you are best at.
Before we go on, let’s clarify that this isn’t completely a bad thing or the wrong way to do fitness. Many people maintain their health in this way and any movement over no movement at all is always best.
But if you have specific goals around your fitness and performance, like you want to gain muscle, you want to get that first pull up, you want to be able to run a mile faster, you want to be able to deadlift three times your bodyweight... then you train.
Training is going into the gym and doing what needs to be done. It’s repeating the same movements over and over again so they get better and better. It’s following a structure and being efficient with your time and energy. It’s progressive and each time you’re training, you are seeking to do something better than the last time you did it.
Do you workout or do you train?
