CrossFit FAQ: Answering CrossFit Questions

Welcome to the Brazen Fitness FAQs page! Here, we address your most pressing questions about CrossFit—covering everything from its foundational principles to detailed insights on workouts, techniques, and safety.

Is CrossFit better than a traditional gym?

This is a common question and the answer is, it depends. CrossFit and traditional gym workouts have different approaches to fitness. While gyms typically focus on isolated muscle groups, CrossFit aims for functional movements that improve overall strength and conditioning. Join gym if you prefer a structured workout routine and want to focus on specific muscle groups. However, if you're looking for a high-intensity, well-rounded fitness program that challenges your body in new ways, CrossFit may be the better option for you.

Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a newbie, our comprehensive FAQ section aims to provide clear and concise answers to enhance your CrossFit journey.  So, let's dive in and get your CrossFit questions answered!

Is CrossFit good for beginners?

Yes, CrossFit can be a great option for beginners. It is important to start with the basics and gradually increase intensity as you become more comfortable and familiar with the movements. Many CrossFit gyms offer beginner classes or have coaches who can modify workouts for beginners.

Do I need to be fit to start CrossFit?

Do you need a degree to go to college? :) You definitely do not need to be fit to start CrossFit. Less than 30% of our new members have tried CrossFit before and our classes always have a variety of ages, shapes, sizes, and experience levels. Most importantly, we always start newcomers with our OnRamp program that teaches you the fundamentals of it in a safe and effective way. So don’t worry about your current level of fitness, it’s about where you’re going, not where you are today.

Is CrossFit safe?

A 2019 study of over 400 participants showed the rate of injuries per 1,000 hours of CrossFit training was 3.24 — on par with regular strength training, and about half that of recreational street running! So, it is actually safer than jogging, believe it or not. But that’s not all: our team knows the importance of a good warm-up and scaling down movements in order to perform them safely.

All of our classes emphasize excellent technique at all levels of fitness. So, no, we don’t think it is particularly dangerous. In fact, at Brazen Fitness, it’s about as safe as it gets. So if you're still asking, is CrossFit safe? Just come on in, and we’ll show you just how safe our program can be.

What is the CrossFit definition and how does it help your fitness?

CrossFit is defined as a high-intensity fitness program that incorporates elements from several sports and types of exercise, including weightlifting, running, and gymnastics. The primary goal of CrossFit workouts is to improve overall performance by enhancing strength, endurance, flexibility, and speed. Each CrossFit workout, often referred to as the WOD (Workout of the Day), is designed to push your limits and help you achieve the best possible fitness outcomes.

By consistently participating in CrossFit exercises, you will experience noticeable improvements in your body composition and overall health. Our expert CrossFit coaches are dedicated to helping you understand each workout and perform it safely. They will also guide you on proper nutrition and the use of essential accessories to support your fitness journey.

What age is best for CrossFit?

CrossFit is suitable for all ages, from children to older adults. It is never too late or too early to start training. Our team will tailor the intensity and complexity of exercises according to your age and fitness level. We also offer specific programs for teenagers and seniors to ensure their safety and success in the CrossFit program

Why is CrossFit so effective?

It is a combination of constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity. This approach to fitness allows you to work on multiple muscle groups and develop all aspects of physical fitness, ensuring that your body doesn't get used to any one type of workout.

The community aspect of CrossFit also plays a significant role in its success. Our gym provides a supportive environment where members encourage each other and push each other to new heights. No matter what your current fitness level or experience may be, you will find the support and motivation you need to reach your goals.

How much does it cost?

Group class plans start around $189 for 8 classes/month. Personal training prices are anywhere in the $80-$120 per session depending on the package. If you want more information, click on the Pricing button on the main menu above!

What if I have an injury?

First off, please make sure to check with a professional to rule out serious medical scenarios that may worsen with exercise.  If you have done that, then know that our general stance on injuries is that motion is a necessary part of recovery so we rarely advocate for complete rest. Instead, we prefer to partner with you on substituting movements in class and managing load so that you can keep on training. Our coaching staff is here to listen and help you adapt.

Can I try it out first?

Yes! We do free trial classes for beginners on Saturdays. Go to brazenfitness.com/freetrial to reserve your spot!

What should I wear to a CrossFit workout?

Having the right gear can make a significant difference in your CrossFit performance. Start with a comfortable, breathable shirt made of moisture-wicking material. This helps manage sweat during high-intensity sessions. Shorts or leggings that allow freedom of movement are essential, as CrossFit involves a variety of exercises from weightlifting to gymnastics.

Proper footwear is crucial—opt for CrossFit-specific shoes that offer stability, support, and flexibility. Accessories like wrist wraps, knee sleeves, and weightlifting belts can provide additional support, especially during heavy lifts. Essentially, your attire should be functional, safe, and aligned with CrossFit terms and safety standards to help you achieve your best performance.

Common questions: Will Crossfit make me fit or bulky?

This is one of the most common questions we receive, and rightfully so. People often worry that CrossFit will make them bulky, especially women. The reality is that CrossFit focuses on functional movements and high-intensity workouts that promote fat loss and lean muscle gain.

The CrossFit definition emphasizes overall fitness rather than emphasizing bulk. While you will gain muscle and strength, the chances of becoming overly muscular like a professional bodybuilder are slim unless you specifically train for that outcome. By regularly engaging in CrossFit, you'll see improvements in your performance and physical appearance, becoming fitter and stronger rather than simply bulky.

It's important to note that weight management is a crucial part of the CrossFit journey. Combined with proper food, CrossFit allows you to achieve a balanced and healthy physique.
